I’m Jen DeCurtins and I am a Charlotte, North Carolina-based yoga teacher, personal trainer, CrossFit coach, group exercise instructor, book author, blogger and freelance writer. I LOVE WHAT I DO.
In September 2011 I left a six-year career in advertising and marketing to follow my dream of a making my passion my work. Identifying exactly what I was passionate about and then figuring out how to make it my livelihood was not exactly a walk in the park. I spent years working towards doing a little more of what I love and a little less of the other stuff. And now that I’m on the other side…I haven’t looked back. It makes me so excited to share my story with others.
I am a graduate of the University of Georgia where I earned a B.A. in Public Relations through the Grady College of Journalism. When I was in college I thought I wanted to be a suit wearing, globe traveling international businesswoman but an unfortunate experience with calculus changed all of that. I learned that much more success comes when you follow the path of things you are good at (writing, speaking, design, connection) instead of struggling through the things that drag you down (basically all things math, finance and management related).
I was extremely fortunate to land my first job out of college working in marketing at an amazing beach resort outside of Charleston, South Carolina. From there I spent the next five years working for mid-sized regional Southern ad agencies. It wasn’t that I didn’t like working in advertising, if I had to imagine a “corporate” job to have advertising is it for me. It really is like what you see on TV and in movies, there are ping pong tables, people lounging and brainstorming, it’s acceptable to crack open a beer after a long day dealing with clients, you walk into boardrooms and present creative ideas on black boards, etc. It was just that over the course of six years I found this other thing that absolutely lit me up and made me feel more energized and excited than I had ever felt before.
It all started with launching a food/recipe blog and teaching some group exercise classes. That slowly turned into a new healthy living/lifestyle blog, Peanut Butter Runner, completing a 200-hour yoga teacher training program and obtaining a personal training certification. Before I knew it I was living this completely different life outside of my day job. After years of spending weekends in trainings, teaching classes before and after work, writing blog posts late into the night and burning the candle at both ends I finally reached the point where I could let go of advertising and make writing, fitness and yoga my new day-to-day.
These days I split my time between teaching yoga, personal training, freelance marketing and social media work and writing. My core training book, Ultimate Plank Fitness: 101 Plank Exercises for a Strong Core, Killer Abs…and a Killer Body, was released in April 2015. My second book, The Complete Guide to Yoga Inversions and Arm Balances, will be released in December 2015.
Every single day I feel incredibly lucky and grateful that this is my life. I never have a morning where I wake up and dread going into work and that’s pretty amazing. I want to share my story and inspire others to look for the things in their lives that make them feel happy, passionate and fulfilled…and then to go after them!
